The only surviving film made by Karel Vachek as a student represents for us today an interesting testimony of his creative development. Nevertheless, we can find in his work treatments which later became typical in his films – above all, the use of the spoken word when Vachek adapted Kamil Lhotak's comments and voice-overs by Ladislav Mrkvička creating a weird poetical collage through the medium of sound editing. Vachek states that originally he wanted to shoot a film about the surrealist painter Mikuláš Medek but was not allowed to do so by the authorities. Having seen the film „The White Dove“ by František Vláčil (1960) he decided to completely revamp his style of direction. „Moravian Hellas“ (1963) thus ensure a radical change in his film production.
